| GETTING THERE: SGT Wayne Heath powers on in the Legacy 100km run. |

Close finishes are not usually the hallmark of long distance athletics events, yet little more than a minute separated the top men’s teams in the 100km run for Legacy at Gaza Ridge Barracks, Bandiana, which raised $8500 in late August.
More than 100 runners and walkers took part in the blustery, cold conditions over the 5km loop around the barracks.
The winning men’s team and overall winners of the inaugural Legacy 100 were the Runfastasucanus team of SGT Jarrod Owen, WO2 Pat Thomas, WO2 Gavin Wickham and Craig Ambler, who clocked 6:8.07, 73 seconds ahead of the Flexout Physio team (6:9.20).
The first mixed team, Team Turtles from RAAF Base Richmond, won in 7:42.54.
The women’s team, the Mars Petcare Princess Warriors, comprising MAJ Fiona King, CAPTs Jo Hem and Karina Jones and CPL Haley Park, set a record time by completing the 100 km in 7:17.50.
Two individuals completed the 80km in less than eight hours. CPL David Slowiak won in 6:43.15, beating Army’s SGT Wayne Heath, who narrowly missed his goal of completing the 80km in less than seven hours.
The run comprised both a team’s or individual challenge. Four team members had to run 100km in under eight hours, while individuals tried to complete as many kilometres as possible up to 80km in eight hours.
The event was the brainchild of SGT Heath and WO2 Pat Thomas, who ran 100km from Old Tallangatta last year to raise money for Legacy.
“Pat and I wanted to get more local Defence runners involved and raise as much money as possible,” SGT Heath said. |
