Airmen and women from RAAF Base Townsville took on their US military counterparts in a ‘boxing match’ recently and came out on top.
Now before you blanch at the idea of allies engaging in pugilistics, this was no stoush in what sport would call the ‘sweet science’.
This ‘boxing’ all took place outside the ring, in the name of charity and in a spirit of friendly rivalry.
US military personnel in Townsville in July for Exercise Talisman Sabre packed a staggering 200 boxes in less than three hours with a team of eight or nine.
Working on the “anything you can do, we can do better” principle, 323ECSS donated their time to help the less fortunate by packing boxes of food at the Food Bank centre in Bohle, Townsville, on July 26.
Squadron spokesperson FLTLT Fiona Harris said that while they wanted to beat the American record, the main aim was to help a worthy cause.
“In the end, all that mattered was that we assisted Food Bank and the great work that they do,” FLTLT Harris said.
With typical Air Force logistics planning and a systematic approach, the team of nine soon had the record on the canvas by packing 216 boxes in about three hours.
“Air Force did this as part of our community service and we expect to go back around Christmas time to help with some more packing,” FLTLT Harris said.
“Normally, it takes a week to pack the number of boxes the Air Force team did in just three hours.”
Asked the secret of their success, FLTLT Harris said it was a challenge Air Force wanted to take and attributed the record to its “wonderful training, Air Force work ethic and assembly line approach”. |
