Air power support to APEC meeting

A 3SQN Hornet detachment is joining other ADF assets to assist the NSW Police and the Attorney-General’s Department with security support during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Meeting in Sydney.
The event commenced on September 2 and will finish on September 9.
Under Operation Deluge, the ADF task force, JTF634, is commanded by BRIG Andrew Smith, who commanded the ADF task force that supported the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
In addition to the Hornet detachment, Air Force personnel and assets assigned to JTF634 have been drawn from 3CRU, the 41WG Air Battle Management Co-ordination Centre, the National Military Airspace Centre and personnel from 2ATHS assigned to other units.
33SQN B707 air-to-air refuellers are supporting the Hornets in flight, and the Air Operations Centre in Canberra has also been activated. Further, the ADF is providing more than 1500 personnel, Black Hawk helicopters, specialised search teams, clearance divers, a special operations task group and Navy ships.
In the lead-up to the operation, ADF elements conducted a range of training in the Sydney area between August 7 and 31. Included in this was a familiarisation flight over the harbour area by a Hornet on August 29. Flying at an altitude of 300m and airspeed of 250kts, the fighter flew in the vicinity of the eastern end of the Sydney Harbour Bridge before returning after over-flying Goat Island in the upper harbour reaches.
The aircraft’s fly-by coincided with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the ADF and NSW Police for Defence support during APEC.
