No. 1 Combat Communications Squadron (1CCS) provided some insight to the uninitiated at its July 19 mixed dining-in night at RAAF Base Richmond.

As one of the most deployed units in the ADF, 1CCS organised the evening in recognition of, and as a thank you to, the civilian and military partners of 1CCS members, who for many years, have made significant sacrifice in their lives because of the squadron’s very high operational tempo.

The function also provided the opportunity to learn of the history and traditions of the Air Force and 1CCS in particular.

Official guests included CAF AIRMSHL Geoff Shepherd and OC 396ECSW GPCAPT Peter Viggers, with entertainment by the Air Command Band.

The squadron’s mission is to provide combat and temporary communications and information system facilities and services in support of ADF and air operations.

1CCS had its origins in the Air Transportable Telecommunications Unit (ATTU), which was formed on September 20, 1965. ATTU’s role was to provide simple communication centres in the field in support of air operations.

Over the years, this role has grown to also include the air traffic control and communications systems required to establish a fully functioning military air base.

As of July 1, 1999, ATTU, after providing communications support for 34 years, was renamed 1CCS.
Although the name of the unit has changed, the role of the unit has remained unchanged.

Since its inception in 1965, it has participated in more than 1000 exercises and operations, providing temporary and tactical communications electronics facilities to support deployed air operations.

1CCS continues to evolve to meet the needs of the Air Force in an ever-changing environment, currently providing all types of equipment required for a modern military air base. The equipment types include mobile air traffic control towers, satellite communications and information systems, as well as voice networks.

1CCS has provided personnel for various exercises and operations throughout Australia and the world; the most recent being Operations Catalyst and Slipper in the MEAO.

In 2003, 1CCS was presented with its Governor-General’s Banner in recognition of 25 years of continuous service to the Air Force, as well as being awarded a Meritorious Unit Citation for Operation Falconer in Iraq.
