Fresh from her success at this year’s Australian Defence Road Cycling Championships at RAAF Base Williamtown on July 14-15, CPL Fiona Bradfield can’t wait to get back on the road again.

CPL Bradfield, from the ADF Investigative Service at Lavarack Barracks in Townsville, was the overall women’s champion after winning the road race, criterium and the 20.5km time trial in 36:34.

She has been cycling for about three years and racing competitively for more than a year with the Townsville Cycle Club.

She took up the sport after being posted to RAAF Base East Sale in 2005 and on arrival found there was no ice rink to cater for her figure skating.

This year, CPL Bradfield went one better than her second place at last year’s titles and she hopes for more competition when the road titles are held in Holsworthy in 2008.

“Work tempo, deployments and other considerations reduced the field this year,” CPL Bradfield said. “Hopefully, we will have a few more competitors so it will be as competitive as the 2006 event at Williamtown.

“I raced against the B-grade men this year and felt I was competitive with them, especially in the road race.

“I was most pleased with that event where I finished only about 500m behind the men.”
