Number 28 (City of Canberra) Squadron had its service to the Canberra region over the last 24 years recognised by a plaque dedication at the RAAF Memorial Grove, Majura, on June 23.

The event was part of the ACT Reserve Forces Day (RFD) celebrations, and, later, the local RFD council presented the squadron a framed picture of last year’s parade.

The No. 28 Squadron Association provided the plaque, assisted by a grant from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs through its ‘Saluting Their Service’ Commemorations Program.

Addressing the ceremony at the service, DCAF AVM John Blackburn alluded to the strong links that exist between the Air Force and the city and region.

“The Royal Australian Air Force has always valued its strong links with the Australian community,” AVM Blackburn said. “The link between No. 28 Squadron and the ACT goes back now for more than 20 years. Since then, many hundreds of part-time members, most of whom lived and worked in Canberra, have given valuable service to the Air Force and the ACT community.

“The link between the squadron and the ACT was strengthened in 2003 when its members played a significant role in fighting the bushfires. It was appropriate that later that year, the ACT Government granted the right of freedom of entry to the City of Canberra to the squadron.

“I congratulate No. 28 Squadron on its past achievements and its equally promising future in serving the nation and the ACT. I also commend the Squadron Association for arranging for this plaque to be dedicated here today.”

The plaque’s inscription says: “Proud of a dedicated and longstanding service to Australia and her people, and part of the community in Canberra, her nation’s capital”.
