ACW Renae Mehonoshen and fellow members of No. 27 (City of Townsville) Squadron took Reserve Forces Day to new heights this year.

Thanks to 38SQN’s Detachment B, they undertook a flight in a Caribou to mark the occasion. The aircraft had its nose painted red for Red Nose Day, as part of fundraising activities by the detachment.

Detachment commander SQNLDR Michael Burgess-Orton organised the flight. SQNLDR Burgess-Orton said Reservists were an important part of his workforce, with 15 Air Force Reservists serving in the detachment.

“They make a great contribution to Caribou operations,” he said.

ACW Mehonoshen joined the RAAF Active Reserve in July 2005 as a clerk supply and has almost completed a seven-month tour on continuous full-time service with the squadron.

“I was asked if I could backfill for an operational deployment and I jumped at the opportunity to experience life in the permanent Air Force,” she said.

“I joined the Reserves as I wanted to do something to supplement university and gain new skills. I have also met some amazing people and can now say that I have flown in a Caribou.”

27SQN CO SQNLDR Alan Collier-Baker said the day was “an outstanding success.”

“The men and women of the Reserve Forces either serving within Reserve squadrons or posted to permanent Air Force units are essential elements of today’s ADF, and this was a wonderful opportunity to thank them for their year-round support of the Air Force Reserves,” he said.
