Home base gave Air Force cyclists some advantage but not the ultimate edge as they gained a share of the minor medals at the Australian Defence Road Cycling Championships at RAAF Base Williamtown on July 14-15.
Navy and Army took the lion’s share of the honours thanks to the efforts of Navy’s LS Dion Blair and Army’s CPL Fiona Bradfield.
Australian Defence Cycle Club president SGT Mick Rand from 77SQN described the racing as “fast and furious all weekend with aggressive races held in the best of competitive spirits”. LS Blair proved unstoppable in the criterium and 33.5km time trial in 49:12 to be the overall A-grade champion.
CPL Bradfield emulated the feat in the women’s event, becoming overall champion after winning the road race, criterium and the 20.5km time trial in 36:34.
SGT Rand was third in the men’s time trial in 50:34 with Kable Mitchell second in 50:14.
77SQN’s LAC Michael Greck finished second in both the B-grade road race and criterium behind Navy’s CPO Paul Hurst whose efforts, coupled with a third in the 20.5km time trial, gained him the overall B-grade championship.
SGT Peter Miller from 3CRU was third in the B-grade road race and fourth in the time trial in 33:21.
FLTLT Leon Izatt from JEWOSU finished second in the B-grade time trial in 33:19.
Army’s CPL Jason Roberts won the A-grade road race from Navy’s AB Cameron Schmid and LS Julian Amos, but that was the only road discipline LS Blair did not dominate.
“LS Blair was a deserved overall champion,” SGT Rand said. “He dominated the criterium and time trial and used his time-trialling skills to take out both races convincingly.”
