While air traffic controllers enjoyed a little State of Origin rivalry out at the Shoalwater Bay Training Area, PLTOFF Marty Ferguson was enjoying the challenge of controlling a mixture of military and civilian aircraft in the same airspace at Townsville.
The 44WG tower controller said “on any given day of the exercise, there was the possibility to control both Australian and American Hornet jets, B707 tankers, C-17s and Black Hawks, just to name a few”.
He said the best part of the exercise was controlling different types of aircraft that do not usually operate out of Townsville, as well as working closely with foreign operators.
“The variety and volume of traffic for the exercise and inclement weather, mixed with the mountainous terrain of Townsville, all contributed to the unique experience of controlling aircraft during the exercise,” he said. |
