The Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation Brisbane received a fuel-injected fundraising boost after the first RAAF Base Amberley drag racing enthusiasts’ day was held recently at Willowbank Raceway.

The raceway and its team of volunteers donated two hours of track time for Amberley during the event, which raised nearly $1000 for the foundation.

The money was accepted by foundation representative Lauren Highman after the funds were raised through entry fees, donations and the sale of merchandise.

“The use of Willowbank Raceway was in return for our yearly support of the Winternats, for which 82WG provides an F-111 display that is thoroughly enjoyed by the huge crowds present,” event organiser CPL Justin Hayden said.

“The [enthusiasts’] day was run and organised in conjunction with Willowbank Raceway’s Tracey Fletcher and it is hoped that together we can turn this into an annual event. So, if you are even a little bit curious about trying drag racing, this is a perfect way to get in on the act. Keep your ear out for next year’s event when we will do it all again.

“This unique opportunity provided a way for both established drag racers to compete against each other and those new to the sport to come out and experience something a little different.”

A large variety of bikes and cars lined up against each other on the track. Old and new were represented, ranging from an LX Torana, Pontiac, HQ Holden and Volkswagen Beetle to a Kawasaki Z750, Suzuki GSXR600 and a Commodore SS VZ Ute.

“I really enjoyed the opportunity to be able to organise an event where a lot of people got to do something for the first time and really enjoy it,” CPL Hayden said.

“With Willowbank Raceway situated so close to the RAAF base, lots of people had thought about drag racing but never actually given it a go. This event gave them a very relaxed way to get involved.

“I also liked being able to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital and help them to continue their support of sick children and their families.”
