Prime Minister John Howard has announced that a memorial to Australian Peacekeepers will be built on Anzac Parade in Canberra.
With an initial grant of $200,000, the project that will commemorate the proud tradition of service and sacrifice of Australia’s peacekeepers is now well underway.
Mr Howard said the new memorial would be a fitting acknowledgement of the professionalism and dedication of past and present peacekeepers and the families and loved ones who have supported them.
“Today, peacekeeping remains an important role, with the ADF, the AFP and civilians serving our country with distinction as members of important peacekeeping missions around the world, most notably in East Timor and the Solomon Islands,” Mr Howard said.
While the government has made an initial grant to the memorial, it will be up to the Australian Peacekeeping Memorial Committee to raise additional funds and choose a final design for the memorial.
Donations to the memorial fund are tax deductible. Visit www.peacekeepingmemorial.org.au for details. |
