Air Force skiers and snowboarders around Australia are hanging up their swimsuits and anxiously watching for the first snows of winter.
They are preparing to strap themselves to strips of fibreglass and hurl themselves as quickly as possible down Mount Hotham, Victoria, during the RAAF Alpine Sports Association’s (RASA) alpine (downhill racing) competition, RASA Week.
The competition will be held from July 29-August 5 and the association is inviting skiers and snowboarders of all levels from beginner to expert to get involved.
During the week, participants will receive instruction, participate in team competitions and activities, spend time in as well as on the snow, and generally celebrate all that is good about snow – by night as well as by day.
RASA president WGCDR Glen Campbell said he was looking forward to a good week.
“I was really impressed with the level of skiers we had last year,” he said.
“After a few days on the snow and some racing lessons, we had a lot of people we were able to invite to race at higher levels than those for which they had originally entered.”
Snowboarder SGT Katarina Babic, who attended for the first time in 2006, said: “It was a great atmosphere in which to gain more confidence on the slopes, and by the end of the week, I had improved by leaps and bounds.”
Despite the accent on a good time, RASA week promises world-class levels of instruction and serious competition. Further, the ADF’s inter-Service competition will be held at Mount Hotham the following week, from August 5-10, and Air Force powder hounds will be out in force for selection to the prestige event, while other attendees at RASA will be invited to participate and also assist with running the inter-Service competition.
The cost of RASA week is about $1200, which includes lessons, events, ski-lift charges, food and accommodation, and most transport.
