Right formula for Townsville

Edition 4909, 31 May, 2007
It may sound like a mouthful but “contaminant containment” is one proud boast RAAF Base Townsville can make after the recent three-year renewal of its ISO14001:2004 certified status.

The base has always laid claim to having the ‘most mature Environmental Management System (EMS) in the Australian Defence Force’.

This was proven right last December when the base came through the renewal process with flying colours.

“After an intensive four-day audit by the external auditing company, NCS International, RAAF Base Townsville’s EMS achieved a three-year renewal of its ISO14001:2004 certified status,” Base Commander WGCDR Graeme Davies said. “ISO14001 is an internationally-recognised standard that specifies the requirements of an EMS.”

One of the base’s environmental improvement plans in 2006 resulted in a rationalisation of Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) release at the base. The white fire-fighting foam is a known environmental contaminant.

“With all training now being conducted at the bundled base vehicle-washing facility, all of this AFFF will be captured and taken to an approved waste facility in Townsville for treatment before going to landfill,” WGCDR Davies said.

“I believe RAAF Base Townsville still has the most mature EMS, thanks to the commitment and effort of our base personnel and the hard work of our Regional Environmental Officer.”
