DSTO goes hyper in Brisbane

Edition 4908, 17 May, 2007
A primary research facility in hypersonics – the study of velocities greater than five times the speed of sound (Mach 5) – has been opened in Brisbane by DSTO.

Australia’s Chief Defence Scientist, Dr Roger Lough, told guests at the opening that it would add a new dimension to Defence engagement with Queensland, particularly in smart and future technologies. Parliamentary Secretary Peter Lindsay also attended.

In November last year, DSTO and USAF signed an eight-year, $70 million agreement to advance research into high-speed (hypersonic) flight.

Mr Lindsay said the agreement with USAF showed that Australia enjoyed a world-class reputation in hypersonics research and Australian expertise was leading the way in this technology.
