6SQN is set for 90th anniversary

Edition 4908, 17 May, 2007
It's a long way from its genesis in the linen and wire era to the F-111 powerhouse unit for 6SQN, which has returned to its roots in a visible way to celebrate its 90th anniversary.

To mark the occasion this year, F-111 A8-125 has had its rudder painted red and emblazoned with the stylised white kangaroo, similar to that which appeared on the original SE 5A aircraft used when the squadron was established in 1917 under the Australian Flying Corps.

After WWI the squadron was disbanded. 6SQN was not reconstituted until WWII, when it began flying operations in 1939.

At the end of war the squadron was disbanded again.

The squadron was reconstituted in 1948 with Avro Lincolns. In 1955, it received Canberra bombers.

In 1970 the squadron received the leased Phantoms, replaced several years later with the F-111.

6SQN will be holding a 90th anniversary dinner at the Airmen’s Mess at RAAF Base Amberley on June 16 from 6pm.

Numbers are limited, so attendees should RSVP as soon as possible.

Members interested in attending should contact SGT Reece Twible by May 25 on (07) 5461 3860 or email reece.twible@defence.gov.au
