Work is well underway on the second phase of the new system that will standardise logistics, ground maintenance and related financial processes across the ADF.
The Military Integrated Logistics Information System (MILIS) will allow better decision-making support for logistic, engineering and finance staff and will include a new and enhanced financial capability to assist Defence meet its governance, compliance and performance requirements.
DMO’s Director General Materiel Information Systems, BRIG David McGahey, said MILIS represented a significant leap forward in Defence’s ability to manage and sustain a truly integrated supply chain to support ADF operations at bases and in the field.
“The vision we’re working towards hasn’t been achieved anywhere else in the world – it will put Australia at the forefront of integrated logistics management and provide a significant boost to the ADF’s ability to mount and sustain military operations,” he said.
“Importantly also, MILIS will greatly enhance Defence’s ability to track and account for assets, thereby helping to ensure that the ADF gets even more capability for each dollar spent.”
MILIS is being delivered through Joint Project 2077 in several phases. The latest phase involves the roll-out of an automated ‘track and trace’ system in the MEAO, which enables stores and equipment to be tracked as containers, pallets and individual items move through the supply chain.
BRIG McGahey said the roll-out of ‘track and trace’ and Project JP2077 had already started to make the MILIS vision a reality.
“We’ll be working hard to deliver the remaining capabilities commencing early in 2008,” he said. “It will impact SDSS (Standard Defence Supply System) users, logistic policy and procedure managers, finance users, through-life support organisations, and some contracted service providers.
“Maintenance processes for ground support equipment used by Air Force units will also be undertaken in MILIS, while other changes to Air Force logistics processes or procedures will be kept to a minimum.”
