Air Force finished second in the Western Australian Tri-Service Australian Football Championship at Rockingham in Perth recently, having split its matches against Army and Navy.
Army made light of its lack of preparation to vanquish both Navy and Air Force and take the title.
Navy, which was no match for Army in the competition opener, losing 1.2 (8) to 13.8 (96), also lost to Air Force 18.8 (116) to 3.1 (19) despite improving their score after a strong first quarter.
Air Force took to the field full of confidence for the decider after the resounding win against Navy.
It was soon tested by the more aggressive Army approach and eventually lost 3.2 (20) to 6.4 (40).
CPL Dean Rodrigues from 79SQN was the outstanding player of the carnival with SGT Graham Docking, also from 79SQN, and Aaron Hughes of 44WG, among Air Force’s better players.
“We had a 30-minute break before taking on tall, strong, boisterous Army,” manager-coach CPL Lee Taylor, from RAAF Base Pearce, said. “We stuck with them well. We ran out of steam but we pegged a few goals back in the end.” |
