Blood and sweat were shed on a different kind of battlefield when Air Force beat Army for the inaugural SA Legacy Cup in their Australian football match at Adelaide’s AAMI Stadium on April 21.

Starting as underdog, Air Force proved that speed and agility could overcome muscle in a 30-point victory against Army, 5.13 (43) to 1.7 (13).

The match raised money for, and awareness of, Legacy.

Both went in strongly from the bounce and LAC Chris Godden scored after five minutes. Army was hard at the ball in a hotly-contested match in which FLTLT Adam Frizell came off early in the first half with a deep gash to the head and LAC Ryan McKee hurt his knee.

Five stitches later, FLTLT Frizell was back on the ground to break up Army’s strong defensive line.

There was little more than a goal in it at half-time and was still anyone’s game with Air Force leading 17-9. Air Force stormed through another goal to further their lead in the first few minutes back on the ground.

FSGT Phil Davenport took a screamer deep in Air Force’s forward line and a quick handball to LAC Chris Karamanlis resulted in the man-of-the-match’s second goal.

“The Legacy Cup is symbolic of the very strong bonds that Legacy has with the ADF,” SA and Broken Hill Legacy President, Max Lemon, said on presenting the trophy to Air Force.

Air Force skipper, CPL Adrian Borlace, accepted the Legacy Cup on behalf of his team. “The Army lads put up a good fight and, in true ADF style, they didn’t give up during the match,” CPL Borlace said.

Air Force also raised more than $2500 in the lead-up to the match, with fundraising continuing throughout the year for Legacy.
