SGT Glenn Kirkham from 44WG DET Darwin and LACW Tania Wollaston from 114MCRU took the honours at the second annual Wendy Jones Memorial Fun Run at RAAF Base Darwin on March 30.
SGT Kirkham crossed the line in the 5km walk/run around the base golf course in 20.52, with LAC Wollaston the first woman home in 24.18.
The run marked the second anniversary of the Sea King helicopter crash in Nias on April 2, 2005, in which nine ADF members lost their lives while supporting the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami relief operations.
SGT Jones was the senior medical assistant who was posted on strength at Health Services RAAF Base Darwin from February 1, 2002, to January 13, 2004.
“All who knew Wendy, whether from Darwin or from previous postings around Australia, knew that she was a dedicated Air Force member who loved her fitness and sporting activities,” CPL Cathy Browning of RAAF Base Darwin said.
“The idea of the run to remember Wendy was initiated by CPL ‘Eddie’ Goldner shortly after the incident.
“Thanks go to SGT George Scamakas and CPL Paul Taylor for organising the event and members of the base.” |
