Ally
through thick and thin
AS AN American working temporarily in Australia, I am rarely surprised to learn that my compatriots are often blissfully unaware of Americas participation in several of the conflicts of its recent past. I have always held this ignorance in some disdain. It thus came as a slight shock to my pride to learn that Australia has supported the US in every major military action the US has undertaken since World War II. I believe few (if any) other nations can claim such a record of mutual support. In todays world it is more crucial than ever that countries and their voting public understand who their true allies are. Australia is Americas close friend, in peace and in war. It would benefit both countries for the American public to understand this more clearly. When I go back to the US, I shall do my part in spreading the good word and I hope there are ways that the courageous men and women in the Australian armed forces can do what they always seem to do anyway help the Americans. Just
calling to say I appreciate Air Force efforts
I WISH to publicly thank the Air Force officer (whose name escapes my memory) who found my lost mobile phone at the Avalon Air Show on Friday afternoon. He found it near an entrance to the expo marquee where it had slipped from my pocket. When I realised I had lost it, I called my phone from my wifes mobile desperately hoping someone would hear it and answer my call. To my relief someone answered and I said You have found my phone. A friendly gentleman said, Yes I have and explained that it was safe with him but he couldnt arrange to meet me to return it straight away because he was in a meeting. He would, however, return my call at its conclusion. I know the call to my phone would have disrupted his meeting because my ring tone was set to maximum volume. I apologise for that disruption. Some time later, he used my phones contact list to call me on my wifes phone and we arranged a location to meet, whereupon I found out he was a RAAFie. I thanked him for looking after my phone and returning it to me. It is pleasing to see that the Air Force is in such good hands. Thanks again. FSGT Mal Cockerell (retd) |
