Thanks for the support

TO THE men and women of the Australian Army, Navy and Air Force and in particular to the deployed members of Operation Slipper, CO, officers and enlisted members of 6SQN RAAF Base Amberley [and other units listed],

I just wanted to say thank-you all so very much for your messages of love and support that so many people sent after Mark’s accident.

Your words and gestures have given me so much strength to cope with the most horrible of circumstances.

[My son] Mitchell will also gain a lot of strength and pride when he looks over these messages that I have kept.

I have been overwhelmed with the outpouring of compassion you have each shown us and it has restored my faith in humanity.

I am so very proud of Mark, his achievements and how he served his country. But I miss my husband so very much, the life we shared and the future we had planned with Mitchell.

My wonderful memories and treasured photos keep his spirit close to my heart and are giving me strength on those trying days. If you have some special memories that you would like to share with myself and Mitchell please email to: memories_of_mark@hotmail.com

Thank you again for your love and support.

Ally through thick and thin

AS AN American working temporarily in Australia, I am rarely surprised to learn that my compatriots are often blissfully unaware of America’s participation in several of the conflicts of its recent past. I have always held this ignorance in some disdain. It thus came as a slight shock to my pride to learn that Australia has supported the US in every major military action the US has undertaken since World War II. I believe few (if any) other nations can claim such a record of mutual support.

In today’s world it is more crucial than ever that countries and their voting public understand who their true allies are. Australia is America’s close friend, in peace and in war. It would benefit both countries for the American public to understand this more clearly.

When I go back to the US, I shall do my part in spreading the good word and I hope there are ways that the courageous men and women in the Australian armed forces can do what they always seem to do anyway – help the Americans.

Fostering team-building with ADF help

ON behalf of the staff and Grade 12 students of Western Cape College, I would like to sincerely thank you, the other Scherger staff and the Air Force for allowing us to use the facilities at Scherger for our Grade 12 Leadership Camp.

Western Cape College is committed to building strong leadership and team spirit in our students, especially the Grade 12s. The objective of the camp was to foster these capabilities.

The camp was a great success. Students responded positively to all the team-building sessions and undertook all the cleaning and housekeeping tasks with enthusiasm. Despite the demanding schedule, there were very few complaints and it was great to see the students actively enjoying themselves.

A major factor contributing to the success of the camp was the fantastic venue that was made available to us. Students and staff were very impressed with the facilities and this made planning and participating in the activities so much easier.

The hospitality shown to us by you and Dave made us feel very welcome. The students and staff were especially impressed with the tour of the base. We gained an added appreciation of the Scherger Base and the Air Force in general.

We would appreciate if you could pass on our sincere thanks to the relevant people in the Air Force [and] we look forward to fostering the relationship between Western Cape College and Scherger Air Force Base in the future. Thank you.

Andrew Brandon, Head of Senior School and Mary Ann Thompson Grade 12 Coordinator

Editors note: A letter of thanks to FSGT Brian Hughes and staff at Scherger for their assistance.

Just calling to say I appreciate Air Force efforts

I WISH to publicly thank the Air Force officer (whose name escapes my memory) who found my lost mobile phone at the Avalon Air Show on Friday afternoon.

He found it near an entrance to the expo marquee where it had slipped from my pocket.

When I realised I had lost it, I called my phone from my wife’s mobile desperately hoping someone would hear it and answer my call. To my relief someone answered and I said “You have found my phone”.

A friendly gentleman said, “Yes I have” and explained that it was safe with him but he couldn’t arrange to meet me to return it straight away because he was in a meeting. He would, however, return my call at its conclusion. I know the call to my phone would have disrupted his meeting because my ring tone was set to maximum volume. I apologise for that disruption. Some time later, he used my phone’s contact list to call me on my wife’s phone and we arranged a location to meet, whereupon I found out he was a RAAFie.

I thanked him for looking after my phone and returning it to me.

It is pleasing to see that the Air Force is in such good hands. Thanks again.
