The RAAF Welfare Trust Fund (RWTF) continues to aid the dependants and spouses
of Air Force members who have died in full-time service through the relatively
new RWTF Educational Sponsorship Scheme.
The scheme aims to assist dependants to complete one or more years of secondary
school or, in the case of a spouse, training essential to a successful return
to the workforce.
Air Force members may not be aware that the RAAF Welfare Trust Fund
operates an educational sponsorship scheme, RWTF Secretary Russ Thomson
said.
Since the introduction of the scheme, the fund has made some grants
and presently has the capacity to do more.
If any Air Force member is aware of a family whose circumstances meet
the eligibility criteria, the fund would welcome its contact details being
passed on to the family.
Grants of up to $1000 at a time may be paid for a dependants schooling.
This grant would help pay for schooling for one secondary school year or,
in the case of an adult, assist in funding a course necessary to enable
a return to the workforce.
The basic criteria for assessment for a grant are:
- The member must have died in full-time service from any cause.
- The dependant and/or family must be facing some need in pursuing education
or training.
Applications will be given priority on the basis of relative need if insufficient
funding is available to satisfy all applications.
Dependants who re-apply for grants in subsequent years after being granted
initial sponsorship will normally be of a lower priority, subject to assessment
of need, than new applications.
The RWTF may decide the number and amount of all grants made for the purpose
of educational sponsorship in any year, based on its consideration of available
funding.
Applications will be called for by September 30 each year for consideration
by the RWTF. Successful applicants will be advised by letter and payment
made in January.
