A SIGNIFICANT piece of lost Air Force history has been reinstated for the 2006 Air Force awards.
The Stonehaven Trophy will be awarded to the Most Proficient Training Unit over a calendar year.
Units eligible for this award will comprise all units under the command of AFTG and its wings, HQGTW, HQATW, RAAFCOL and HQRTW, and individual units that perform a specialist training function under different commands, such as 285SQN and AMTDU.
The trophy was originally awarded to the RAAF “for annual competition by squadrons of the RAAF” by Lord Stonehaven (Baird), who was Governor-General between 1925 and 1931.
It was awarded to 3SQN in 1933, 1934 and 1935. From there, it seemed to disappear until it was found again recently, when the Victorian Branch of the RAAF Association vacated their premises in East Hawthorn, Victoria. Association President Peter Colliver subsequently returned the trophy to Air Force in late January. |
