US commendation for SQNLDR Smith

Volume 49, No. 03, March 08, 2007
AIR Force Reserve officer SQNLDR John Smith was recently awarded the US Army Commendation Medal for his outstanding service on operations.

SQNLDR Smith served as an intelligence officer for the Deputy Chief of Staff, Intelligence Multi-National Force – Iraq (MNF-I), during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

He was deployed to the MEAO between July 2004-January 2005 and was embedded with US forces working on counter-IED issues.

SQNLDR Smith was based with the US Central Command and then with the MNF-I C2 (Intelligence) staff.

His primary functions were IED intelligence analysis and counter-IED operations support.

“I wasn’t involved in IED disposal, because I am an intelligence officer who was involved in analytical work,” SQNLDR Smith said.

“However, I often saw cleared and exploited munitions, homemade explosives and IED components.”

SQNLDR Smith was awarded the medal in 2005 and received it from Director DIO MAJGEN Maurie McNarn late last year.

SQNLDR Smith is now doing Reserve work with the ADF Counter-IED Task Force, a joint unit established to lead efforts across the ADO to counter the IED threat being faced by the ADF in the MEAO.

SQNLDR Smith served with the Army for 25 years before transferring to the Air Force Reserves in 2002.
