PADDLERS: The K4 canoeing team during the 2006 Murray River Canoe Marathon.

ADF canoeists and kayakers hope to paddle their way to permanency under the ADF Sports Council umbrella after recent good efforts in the 2006 Murray River Canoe Marathon.

For the past 37 years, ADF kayaking teams have contested the gruelling 404km, five-day course from Yarrawonga to Swan Hill.

Now, some enthusiasts want to establish an ADF Canoeing Association.

Stewart Nicol, a member of the K4 team this year and a former WGCDR, said a formal association would boost ADF numbers at canoeing events.

Three relay teams and two full-distance paddlers competed. One TK2 relay team had nine Air Force Cadets from Albury who were second in the junior relay in 36:22:29.

The Air Force Cadet staff from Albury were sixth in the TK2 mixed open relay in 34:13:40.

AC Rob Schneider, SQNLDR Nigel Cooke, Stew Nicol, Marie Taylor and Annette Scott were part of the K4 relay team which won in 29:54:01. LCDR Daryl Robinson, of Nowra, competed in the recreational (sea) kayak men’s open class, and came 3rd in 39:12:40.
