Women break police shackles

Volume 49, No. 03, March 08, 2007
THE combined Services ADF women’s Australian football team from Sydney and Canberra broke the shackles of a first-quarter arm wrestle to beat a well- recruited NSW Police Services team in the annual NSW Police Games at Picken Oval, Croydon Park on February 24.

ADF powered home to win 8.3 (51) to NSW Police 5.2 (32). Best for ADF were SMN Hailey Merrick (Navy), CPL Rebekah Allen (Air Force), AB Candice Freeman (Navy), CPL Amy Hall (Army), CPL Kristy Stroop (Army) and CPL Emma Hender (Army).

Both teams tested each other in the first quarter, despite the Police opening the goalscoring within 60 seconds of the start. Scores were level at 1.2 (8) each at the first change with Police ahead by a goal at half-time.

The job was still ahead of them in the final quarter but with several changes to the onfield line-up and three goals in arrears, the ADF kicked 6.1 (37) led by surprise package SMN Hailey Merrick.

NSW Police failed to add to their score and never entered their attacking 50m in the last quarter.
