BATTER UP: CPL Catherine McRae batting during a softball game at the national carnival in Melbourne. |
Volume 48, No. 23, December 14, 2006
The anniversary was held as part of the national carnival in Melbourne from November 6-10.
SQNLDR Trevor Murphy, FSGT Sonia Best, CPO Melinda Dagg and Mrs Alicia Martene were awarded the association’s inaugural life memberships at a special dinner for their dedication to and support of Defence softball over the past years.
After three days of preliminary games, in the grand finals the NSW men won 12-5 against NT, with the NT women making up for that loss with an 11-4 win over NSW.
The NT men put up a good showing before being outclassed by NSW, and although the NT women were the stronger of the two, NSW fought hard to contain the scoreline.
The competition attracted both men’s and women’s teams from NSW, NT and the Royal New Zealand Air Force. It was also the first year that APS personnel were allowed to participate.
The Test matches between the ADF and the New Zealand Air Force teams produced mixed fortunes.
The ADF women retained the Trans- Tasman Trophy with a 13-0 win but the Kiwi men were too strong for the ADF and won 11-0.
The Australian Defence Softball Association has sent men’s and women’s teams to compete in the New Zealand Defence Force Inter-service Championships this month.
