IN GOOD CONDITION: A new easy reference guide to ADF pay and conditions has been developed to give members a simplified summary of the PACMAN. |
By Carol Salisbury
ARE you aware of the ADF’s Conditions of Service?
There are so many conditions of service that there are most likely some you have never heard of.
They are all contained in the ADF’s Pay and Conditions Manual (PACMAN), a detailed publication that sets out all the rules covering pay and conditions and which is good for accurately working out an individual member’s entitlements under any set of circumstances.
Members often require some form of easy guide that can give them a quick overview of their entitlements and have asked for a simple reference.
The Directorate of Conditions Information and Policy Services responded to the request with the Members Guide to ADF Pay and Conditions of Service in Australia. The guide is a simplified summary of the PACMAN.
The guide has been updated for 2007. It contains a number of new initiatives, including details on emergency support for families, superannuation, the family stability initiative (MWD(U)) and leaving the ADF.
The directorate advised that not everything is in the guide. Rates of salary and allowances aren’t included as these go out-of-date quickly, nor are the detailed rules as the Member’s Guide is a quick, snappy reference.
Personnel needing to check their eligibility for a condition will need to read the PACMAN.
Copies of the Member’s Guide are available at http://www.defence.gov.au/dpe/pac/
Members wanting to navigate the pay and conditions maze and learn more about how the PACMAN works will be able to do so via the “Getting the most out of the PACMAN” eLearning suite, which is scheduled for release in 2007.
The directorate describes it as a “fun, interactive tool that takes the mystery out of PACMAN”.

The information in the Member’s Guide is just a summary, so make sure to check details, such as actual rates or eligibility information.
