WINGERS: Part of the Relay for Life team from 396CSW at RAAF Base Darwin. |
By SQNLDR Kate Fox
A TEAM of Air Force members and loyal family recently trod thousands of steps in Darwin – all in the name of charity.
The ‘Wingers’ team from HQ 396CSW took part in the annual NT Relay for Life charity event to raise funds for the Cancer Council.
The 20-hour relay gave locals from 36 teams the opportunity to pitch tents and engage in friendly rivalry with opponents while keeping fit.
White paper bags, lit from within by tea candles, circled the oval and flickered in the dark, providing a remembrance to those who have lost their lives to cancer while adding incentive to flagging footsteps of Wingers team members who walked through the night. The camaraderie among rival teams was heard throughout the evening as walkers were attacked with large water pistols designed to keep the walkers cool and the other teams entertained.
The Wingers trod the greatest number of steps in the walking teams and raised $1,500 through the sale of raffle prizes donated by local businesses.
“What a way to raise money for a noble cause,” organiser CPL Erica Kane said. “Cancer research is not only about trying to preserve life, but encouraging you to live what life you do have to the fullest. You have my support, Relay for Life.”
