Girls run rings around Wagga

Volume 48, No. 12, July 13, 2006

GO GIRLS: The Air Force women’s team after their win in Wagga.

A DOMINANT Air Force women’s team beat the Wagga women’s team 37-17 in the grand final of the 2006 ACT/Wagga inter-Service basketball competition at RAAF Base Wagga recently.

The Air Force men were defeated 50-39 in the grand final by a resurgent Army.

Air Force women’s coach, FLTLT Janeter Turnbull, said the standard of competition for the women was well above what she had seen in past years.

“It was great to see the teams filled with good basketball players who knew how to play the game at a level better than expected,” FLTLT Turnbull said. “The Air Force women played as one unit and the key to winning the grand final was just that.

“We were able to switch up the play of the game to inhibit the scoring effectiveness of the opposition.”

Leading scorer for the women’s grand final was FLTLT Fiona Harris, who top-scored for Air Force with 12 points.

The National Combined Services Tournament is up next at RAAF Base Townsville from December 2 to 9.
