LEGACY is richer by almost $5500, thanks to the fundraising efforts of the AP-3C detachment (Task Group 633.2) deployed in the Middle East.

The detachment’s welfare president, SGT Steve Weaver, had set a goal to raise $10,000 local currency (about $AU3000), to be collected by September 1.

The Task Group began fundraising by conducting activities including sporting events, a trivia night, a 70s/80s disco and a Parliamentarian Rank Slide Auction.

Catherine King, a visiting parliamentarian who participated in the Australian Defence Force Parliamentary Program, donated one of her parliamentary rank slides to the welfare club during her visit.

It was mounted, framed and flown on an AP-3C mission, and then auctioned at a Tour De Force concert. After spirited bidding, CPL Clint Robinson was the successful buyer for a substantial sum.

“I couldn’t let the opportunity go,” CPL Robinson said.

“It’s a one-off, original item that will never be available again. I was worried at one point because there were other people continuing to bid higher than me, but I hung in there and managed to get it. It’ll certainly take pride of place at home.”

On Legacy Day, the welfare committee conducted a hat drop and also sold Legacy badges to the Australian and Coalition forces in the area. The day raised more than $2000.

“Words cannot express how pleased I was to see such generosity from all the people who supported our fundraising effort,” SGT Weaver said.

“I knew that we would come close to meeting our goal but never thought for one minute that we would exceed it the way we did.

“It’s fantastic to see the Task Group members and our coalition partners supporting Legacy. They have every right to be proud of this achievement and I hope that future rotations will support Legacy in the same manner.”
