A RAAF Sabre has been loaned to the Temora Aviation Museum from the RAAF Museum at Point Cook under an historic agreement between CAF AIRMSHL Geoff Shepherd and the Temora museum’s President, David Lowy.
This agreement, along with the establishment of the Air Force Heritage Advisory Council, will help ensure important pieces of Air Force heritage are not only preserved but made available to the Australian public.
The Temora Aviation Museum will give the CAC Sabre A94-983 an ‘E’ servicing and restore it to flying condition, expected to take about 18 months.
It will then become a feature of the museum’s regular flying weekends. In addition to the management of Commonwealth-loaned equipment such as the Sabre, the agreement — signed in November 2005 — also provides the means for coordinating the participation of Temora museum aircraft at ADF events, such as major air shows, Air Force Week and the RAAF Museum’s major activities.
This enabled Temora’s Meteor F.8 fighter to visit RAAF Base Williamtown on June 2 to support the 77SQN reunion day.
The Historic Aircraft Support and Loan Agreement Coordinating Committee was recently established to manage the agreement and boasts Air Force Headquarters, Temora and RAAF Museum representatives.
Air Force units that would like support from the Temora Aviation Museum for upcoming events must apply to AFHQ through the Directorate of Coordination-Air Force. While the museum is generous in its support, there are limits, and AFHQ will consult with the museum to determine which requests will be supported.
