Briefs

Volume 48, No. 17, Sepetember 21, 2006

Delay on service medal
There will be a four to six-week delay in the processing of the Humanitarian Overseas Service Medal (HOSM).

A message advising of the revised nominal roll and relevant directions for applying for the award or addressing grievances will be promulgated in the near future.

In order to ensure that the HOSM and other medals are dispatched to the correct address, all members are requested to ensure that their details are correct on PMKeys, in particular their address and discharge details if appropriate.

UAV a step closer
Defence has moved a step closer to obtaining a Multi-mission Unmanned Aerial System (MUAS) with the government giving approval to commence formal negotiations with the United States in the cooperative development of a MUAS capability.

This capability signals a change in the way Australia will undertake future maritime surveillance and reconnaissance.

The MUAS will reduce the operational burden on Air Force’s AP-3C Orion fleet until the aircraft’s planned withdrawal from service around 2015 to 2018.

The existing manned maritime patrol capability will be replaced with a mix of both unmanned and manned aircraft.
