Fencing Club (AFC) held its annual tournament on August 19, attracting
32 competitors from across seven clubs and confirming the tournaments
place as the premier fencing event on the ACT and ADF calendars.
An individual competition was held for foil, fencings most
fundamental weapon, with Navys LEUT Jason Evans winning
the gold medal.
Six clubs entered the team inter-club Italian relay which pitted
the best fencers for foil, epee, and sabre against each other
in a battle for club pride. Making their first appearance at the
tournament, Southern Highlands won the relay with AFC finishing
third. Based on results from the individual and team competitions,
the AFC was awarded the tournament trophy for the second successive
year.
The ADF team inter-Service foil competition was the final competition
for the day and Navy walked away with the honours. The Navy team
fought off stern challenges from the Air Force and Army teams,
led by OCDT George Minns and OFFCDT Mitchell Keene, to achieve
the victory.
AFC president, OFFCDT Adam Brown, described the tournament as
a satisfying success for all involved.
Being a relatively small sport in the ADF, OFFCDT Brown hopes
that through events like the AFCs annual tournament, fencing
can achieve more recognition as both a fun and challenging activity.
