Tuesday, August 8, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) will
begin the 2006 census of the Australian community.
The census is held every five years across all States and Territories
with the aim of counting every person in Australia.
Although the official census date is August 8, in some places
such as remote communities, the ABS started the count mid-July.
Communications Manager for the Census Management Unit NT, Peter
Osborne, said the census was important in providing information
to help plan for community needs such as schools, hospitals, and
sporting facilities.
The revenue and funds the Territory receives from the Australian
Government are based on the number of Territorians counted.
Missing just a few hundred people can cost the Territory
millions of dollars over five years. Its important for the
Territory to count everyone at census time, Mr Osborne said.
