Cars
PS2 3+

Build ‘em up: You’re the boss in Civilization IV.

Cars.

The game: Following on from the blockbuster movie, Cars is a simple yet challenging racing game.

The play: Fairly simple on a decent sized map, you can drive around and play mini-missions generally in your own order. There are missions that need to be unlocked but mostly you can drive around the entire area with freedom, collecting bonus points and other hidden items as you go. The racing itself involves some power-sliding, boosting and jumping, as well as driving backwards for bonuses. The handling of the cars is simple – as you’d expect for a kids title. The game is split into two sections – one for the kids and the other for all ages.

The terrain: You will notice minor glitches along the way but nothing too bad, and although sometimes the car physics are stretched, it’s all part of the fun of the game. The animation in the cut scenes is quite impressive, although that’s to be expected. The soundtrack is good but limited, and as a result becomes very repetitive. The voices from the movie are authentic.

The experience: Not a long game with two-player content, and although it’s not the next big thing in driving, it’s challenging enough for the family.
