Thinking ahead

Volume 48, No. 12, July 13, 2006

“IT’S time to think outside the box, it’s time to be a bit radical, to come up with some new ideas and new ways of doing business...”

That’s the message from CAF AIRMSHL Geoff Shepherd as Air Force embarks on a major rebalance and reshape project to ensure an efficient, modern organisation for the future.

AIRMSHL Shepherd says that while he is proud of the way Air Force serves the ADF and Australia, he is concerned that structures in place following a number of reviews and downsizing in the past won’t meet both current and future tasks as new hardware and systems are introduced.

“There is pressure across the force and across the structure,” he says, “plus current operational pressures on top of that.

“During previous restructures we’ve shrunk our organisation and increased efficiency. However, we haven’t shrunk evenly and there are some areas that are over-stretched and others that are comfortable.
“So now we have to adjust the structure and workforce – we need to rebalance.”

Assuring Air Force there would be no redundancies, reduction of musterings or getting rid of people, CAF said there was a need to rebalance, to recruit, retrain and reshape.

“There are challenges and opportunities for the future,” he says. “The aim is to achieve a great outcome – to design the Air Force of the future.”

Air Force members will be kept up-to-date during this exciting and demanding period thanks to a new RAAFWEB site, launched by Air Force Headquarters last week.

The site contains a message from CAF, information, FAQs, updates and a feedback forum for members’ questions and views to be heard.

A DVD featuring messages from Air Force leaders on the upcoming changes and their effects has also been launched. Air Force members and APS staff are urged to watch the 40-minute presentation, with viewing times and venues to be announced by each unit.
