AN
AIR Defence Officer has been recognised for his work in Sudan
with a United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) medal.
One of the first members of 2005s Operation Azure, FLTLT
Damian Hehir from Surveillance and Control Training Unit, RAAF
Williamtown, was presented with his UNMIS medal on March 27.
FLTLT Hehir was based primarily in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum.
He worked in air operations and was responsible for the planning
and conduct of UN air missions in the African nation of Sudan.
The situation in Sudan is immensely complicated and deep
seeded; however, with UNMIS presence, the country is finally
making steps forward, he said.
Logistics support, medical evacuations and support to non-government
and government organisations were included in the air missions.
These provided support for the UN Military Observers who communicated
directly with the Sudanese locals.
The highlight for FLTLT Hehir was the opportunity to work
with an amazingly diverse number of people within the United Nations,
as well as the Sudanese, who despite immeasurable hardships remain
an incredibly warm and up-beat people.
