DOMINANT bowling and strong work with the willow saw the Airmen of Amberley easily overcome the Officers to retain the base cricket trophy last month.

The Airmen versus Officers cricket competition trophy is an annual 30-overs game and this year was an opportunity to showcase players’ ability for the upcoming Queensland inter-Service cricket, to be played at Amberley from March 6-10 next year.

After winning the toss, the Airmen sent the Officers in to bat on a fairly good bowlers’ pitch. The Officers lost wickets at regular intervals and were eventually dismissed for the meagre total of 38 off 20 overs.

The Airmen’s captain, Sergeant Mitch Dockett, starred with the ball, taking 4 for 12 off five overs, while Leading Aircraftman Anthony Yarrow took 2 for 1 off five overs.

The Airmen had little trouble chasing the total to finish at 4 for 42 off 11 overs with Corporal Rick Mace finishing with 22 not out.

Flying Officer Dave Murphy was the best with the ball for the Officers, taking 2 for 3 off three overs.

The game took just over two hours to complete, so it was decided to play a 20/20 game, giving the Officers a chance to redeem themselves. But it wasn’t to be.

The Officers won the toss and decided to bat, finishing with 9 for 81 off their allotted overs.

The Airmen had little trouble accounting for the total, losing 3 wickets and taking just 11 overs to remain undefeated.

Corporal Anthony Bleeker was the high scorer on 39 runs not out.
