Making my own way

By Corporal Simone Liebelt

I DIDN’T get much of an introduction to the DTC system before I had to use it for the first time. I was off to RAAF Base Tindal and needed to organise my travel quickly.

I fumbled my way through the travel request and approval process, but had no problem booking my own flights and hire car.

In fact, I really liked the freedom of making my own arrangements, rather than relying on someone else to do it for me. Armed with my brand new Diners Club card and approved travel budget, I headed to Tindal via taxi, flight and hire car.

As I was staying on base but working long hours, I only used the card to withdraw cash from the base ATM for odd meals and incidentals.

This was quite easy and convenient, but I have to admit, not as much fun as getting your allowances deposited straight into your bank account.

After returning to Canberra, I then started receiving e-mails saying I had spent unauthorised funds.
This time, I fumbled my way through CMS to acquit my travel, which was very easy to do, despite the annoyance it caused at the time.

I can’t really complain about the new system; sure, it generates more admin – and I do hate admin – but I believe it’s a small price to pay for the luxury of organising my own travel when and how I want to.
