Facts of Op Bali Assist II

Defence’s contribution to the Australian response to the recent bombings in Bali included:

  • Two Air Force C-130 aircraft from RAAF Base Richmond and crews who provided aero-medical support to those affected by the bombings. Three C-130 aircraft were on standby in Darwin to provide support if required;
  • A small aircraft operations coordination element;
  • Logistics support at RAAF Base Darwin and RAAF Base Williamtown to meet the communications, refuelling, air movements, air traffic control, transport and other support requirements for the conduct of aero-medical evacuation operations at these bases; and
  • About 40 ADF regular and reservist medical personnel deployed to Darwin. The medical personnel were nurses, doctors, anaesthetists, surgeons and critical-care specialists from across Australia. The medical capability that these people provided included:
    • A fly-away surgical team;
    • A three-person medical assistance team deployed by civilian aircraft to Bali to provide triage and evacuation assessment of patients and planning guidance to determine the requirements for ADF support;
    • A deployable health facility that deployed to Bali to treat and process patients for evacuation; and
