New
GPS guidance kits for Hornets
AIR
Force Hornets are to be given potent new weapons guidance capabilities.
Defence Minister Robert Hill announced on October 19 that the
Boeing Corporation has been selected to provide new smart global
positioning system guidance kits.
The weapon is the Boeing Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM).
The new technology uses Global Positioning System guidance that
will provide the aircraft with a state-of-the-art weapon capability
that can be accurately fired day or night in all weather conditions.
Senator Hill said the the new kit had been selected after a thorough
evaluation process and could be used with general purpose and
penetrator bombs.
The new system will enable the F/A-18 to more accurately employ
its ordnance in any conditions, thereby enhancing its strike capability
and further minimising the risk of collateral damage.
The new system is planned to enter service in 2008, at a project
cost of more than $50 million.
