Defence the most trusted organisation in Australia

By Private Andrew Hetherington

THE ADF has come out on top in a national survey conducted to determine which institutions were most trusted by Australians.

Professor Clive Bean, from the Queensland University of Technology, said the ADF was ranked first over the 11 other institutions featured in the survey.

“Australians said they had a high level of confidence in the Defence Force because of its role in protecting the public in the current times, with the potential threat of terrorism,” Professor Bean said.

“The Defence Force is seen as a professional organisation and their role is seen by the public as being very important.”

Second on the survey were the nation’s police forces, followed in turn by the ABC, universities, charities, major Australian companies, Federal Parliament, churches or religious institutions, the Public Service, courts and the legal system, unions and finally the banks and financial institutions.

Professor Bean’s analysis of the survey features in the book Australian Social Attitudes: The First Report
