CHIEF
of Air Force Air Marshal Geoff Shepherd has initiated steps to
manage the concerns of any person who may have been exposed to
asbestos at the RAAF School of Technical Training (RAAFSTT).
AIR FORCE News reported in its September 8 edition that personnel
who had worked or trained in close proximity to the three Metroliners,
acquired in 1999, may face a low risk from exposure to asbestos.
Air Marshal Shepherd has directed all commanders to identify any
aviation technical personnel who may have worked on the Metroliners
between May 23, 1999, and January 20, 2005, either as staff or
students, and provide them with re-assurance as to the low-risk
level involved.
Any concerned personnel are to be encouraged to contact their
local Defence Medical Centre or the Defence Asbestos Hotline on
1800 000 655 for information.
Contact with the Defence Asbestos Hotline will enable any person
concerned about exposure to asbestos to register for the Defence
Asbestos Exposure Evaluation Scheme (DAEES).
DAEES will enable a full evaluation and ongoing assessments to
be made. More information on DAEES can be obtained from the Defence
Occupational Health, Safety and Compensation Hotline 1800 019
955.
As you all know, I am concerned for the well-being of our
people. I require my commanders to ensure we do all that we must
to look after them, Air Marshal Shepherd said.
