Base Amberleys Base rugby league team convincingly demonstrated
it was the A-team when it defeated No. 38 Squadron in a traditional
grudge match.
The Caribou detachment team went down to the base team 30-4.
The match was the latest in Amberleys round robin series
of inter-unit matches. The first match was played between No.
38 Squadron and No. 6 Squadron on August 12. After a hard-fought
duel, No. 6 Squadron narrowly won 22-20, setting the scene for
another tough game.
The confrontation, which took place on August 26 at the base oval,
started strongly, with both teams keen to get on top early.
No. 38 Squadron was the first to score with a nice kick into the
in-goal area. From the kick-off, the base team then forced an
error and ended up scoring after a repeat set of six.
For about 10 minutes, the game levelled out defensively until
the base team started to get on top and scored two more tries.
Base went into half time leading 16-4.
During the second half, both teams made a lot of mistakes, but
Base made the most of the chances given and quickly shot to a
24-4 lead.
Another six points clinched the match and Base walked from the
paddock 26 points in front. Despite the sometimes below-par performances,
players and spectators alike agreed it had been a great game.
No. 38 Squadron will have an opportunity to come back when it
faces No. 1 Squadron in mid-September.
Amberley will also participate in a more serious event when it
hosts the Air Force Rugby League carnival on October 13-14.
