Security blanket

SECURITY at RAAF Base Richmond is paramount for the operations of the Air Lift Group and the wellbeing of base personnel. It’s a responsibility that rests on the shoulders of Sergeant Brian Thomas and the other Security Police.

Sergeant Thomas has been in the Air Force for 20 years and is currently the Senior NCO in charge of Counter Intelligence at RAAF Base Richmond.

His biggest challenge is his commitment to No. 386 Expeditionary Combat Support Squadron in preparing its personnel for operational deployment to hostile environments.

“The most important part of my job is ensuring that Air Force personnel feel safe from security threats so that they can do their jobs,” he says.

Sergeant Thomas, who deployed on Operation Falconer, says he relies on email and briefings to communicate his key messages about base security to the personnel of RAAF Base Richmond.

“We try to make personnel feel safer by educating them about security precautions, which is our way of contributing to the community spirit here at RAAF Base Richmond,” he says.

Security threats are continually evolving, Sergeant Thomas says, so he does his best to complete as many training courses as time allows. Most recently, he completed a protective security course on risk management.
