The long way to the surf

A NEAR-record number of ADF runners joined a 50,000 strong crowd and several “superheroes” at this year’s City to Surf, held in perfect Sydney conditions on August 14.

With “Spiderman” and “Duff Man” (complete with beer belt) out to steal some of the media attention from the serious runners, ADF competitors in Australia’s biggest fun run produced some quality performances.

ADF Running and Athletics Association President Captain Frank Kresse said the City to Surf continued to be one of the highlights of the ADF running calendar and attracted huge numbers every year.

“We had nearly 90 runners enter through the Association this year and many more would have entered directly,” he said.

“We have had great success in taking out the team categories in the past and with the performances this year we are looking good to continue that.”

First ADF runner home was Army Corporal David Whitehead, continuing his white-hot form of late in the sixth-fastest ADF time ever of 46:28 for 37th place.

He was followed nearly two minutes later by Army Sergeant Rob Combe in 48:24 (75th place) and then a procession of ADF runners hoping to break into the top 100 finishers.

Flight Lieutenant Richard Gardiner (51.48) and Flight Sergeant Warren Matulick (53.10) ensured the Air Force was well represented crossing the finish line on Bondi foreshore.

The ADF’s first female entrant home was cross country champion Private Fiona Dubbels, who, despite having to start back in the main group, ran a sensational time of 61:28.
