THE
ADFs finest soccer players took on some of North Queenslands
best and won.
The ADF Football Federation team defeated the representative North
Queensland Razorbacks 4-1 in front of about 3000 soccer fans at
the Townsville sports reserve on July 9.
The match was played as the curtain raiser for the A-League match
between the Queensland Roar and the Central Coast Mariners.
The ADF squad was unsure of the oppositions quality as it
went into the match, though it had watched a recent Razorbacks
game and realised they were very quick.
ADF came out of the blocks hard and fast. The tactic worked as
the Defence team scored an early goal after an opportunistic header
by Leading Aircraftman Amied Shadmaan from RAAF Base Williamtown.
For the next 20 minutes the status quo, as both teams wrestled
to gain the upper hand. Then a fantastic long-range goal by the
Razorbacks took both teams into the break at 1-all. The game was
in the balance.
During the break, ADF coach Warrant Officer Second Class Blaise
Fagan had a quiet chat with the team, and made a couple of inspirational
substitutions. His tactics turned the game on its head.
ADF stormed into the attack in the second half, as it had done
in the first. There followed a dazzling display of laser-like
passing and sharp movement by the ADF team, which had the Razorbacks
on the run.
The ever-present Corporal Geoff Gillard from RAAF Base Williamtown
set the scene with three brilliant goals, giving ADF compete control
of the game and, ultimately, the match.
