New Hornet GPS improves anti-jamming capabilities

Hornets are fuelled before trialing the new GPS antenna at Woomera.

A NEW GPS antenna system developed by DSTO for F/A-18 aircraft has passed recent trials at Woomera and will soon be fitted to the Hornet fleet.

The new antenna, mounted on top of the aircraft behind the cockpit, provides better electronic self-protection against GPS jamming, both for the aircraft’s navigation systems and GPS-guided munitions, which have been planned for fitment to the Hornet fleet.

An extensive program to integrate the antenna into the Hornet’s existing systems had been performed before the final tests, which used jamming equipment developed by the GPS section.
