A TEAM of ADFA students contested the fourth competition of the Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC) for Military

Academies, held in San Remo, Italy, in April.

Air Force Officer Cadet David Schoolderman, Army Officer Cadet Renee Westra, and Midshipman Phil Bywaters represented ADFA at the competition, accompanied by academy staff officers Captain Tamara Foxall and Lieutenant Ty Douglas.

The competition, which was won by the Canadian contingent, aimed to enhance the knowledge of LOAC and promote respect of the rule of law among future leaders.

Sixty midshipmen and officer cadets represented 13 countries, which made the competition a great opportunity for international interaction.

LOAC experts presented lectures on the topic before the competition, in which participants represented fictitious countries in a joint operations centre for a simulated a UN multilateral operation.

Participants engaged in debate and discussion on issues such as military necessity, unnecessary suffering, proportionality and distinction, which arose during the notional conduct of operations.
