Force golfers were unsuccessful at the recent ADF Cup golf championship,
but still came off the 18th hole in the top 20.
The event, which attracted 60 players from Queensland, NSW, the
ACT, South Australia and Victoria, was held at Wodonga Country
Club from April 11-13.
The championship was held over the first two days, with the third
devoted to an Ambrose event held in conjunction with a club competition.
Wing Commanders Trevor Owens and Glen Toscan, both from Canberra,
and Flight Sergeant John Mace, from HMAS Albatross, represented
Air Force. They tied at scratch in 8th and 14th respectively,
but 11th, 13th and 17th on their nett scores. The latter is found
by subtracting their handicaps from their scratch scores.
Event organiser Captain Paul Henry, from Bandiana, said significant
changes to the course provided the players with some real challenges.
The course has been improved and lengthened to 6289m,
he said.
This made for some interesting golf and all the competitors
said they will be back in 2006. In particular, we would like to
see more women and novice players compete in the 2006 championship,
which will be held during the March/April timeframe next year.
The ADF Cup golf championship is the only ADF golf event open
to Servicemen and women without a recognised golf handicap. It
is also the only event that enables Defence civilians, contractors
and retired Defence members to participate as well.
